Step 1 — Confirm Your Eligibility
To vote in South Dakota, you must meet all of the following requirements:
- Be a United States citizen
- Be a resident of South Dakota (you must live at the address where you register)
- Be at least 18 years old on or before Election Day
- Not be under a court order declaring you mentally incompetent to vote
- Not be currently serving a felony sentence (rights are restored upon completion of sentence, parole, and probation)
South Dakota Does Not Require a Reason to Vote Early
Any registered voter in South Dakota may request an absentee ballot without providing a reason. This is sometimes called "no-excuse absentee voting." You do not need to be sick, out of state, or elderly to vote by mail.
Step 2 — Register to Vote
South Dakota offers three ways to register:
Register Online
Visit sdsos.gov and complete the online voter registration form. You will need your South Dakota driver's license or state ID number. Online registration requires a valid SD driver's license or non-driver ID issued by the Department of Public Safety.
Register by Mail
Download and print the South Dakota Voter Registration Form from the Secretary of State's website. Complete it, sign it, and mail it to your county auditor. A list of all 66 county auditor addresses is available at sdsos.gov.
Register in Person
Visit your county auditor's office with a valid photo ID. In-person registration is available during regular business hours up to the registration deadline. You may also register at your county's Department of Motor Vehicles location when obtaining or renewing a driver's license.
Step 3 — Declare Republican Party Affiliation
South Dakota holds a closed Republican Primary. To vote in the Republican Primary and have a say in who represents your party on the November ballot, you must be registered as a Republican.
On your registration form, select "Republican" as your party affiliation. If you are currently registered as a different party or as an Independent, you must re-register as a Republican before the party change deadline to participate in the GOP Primary.
"The Republican Primary is where conservative voters shape the future of South Dakota government. It is where your registration matters most." — South Dakota Republican editorial staff
Step 4 — Find Your Polling Place
Your polling place is assigned based on your registered address. To find your specific location:
- Visit the SD Secretary of State My Voter portal
- Enter your name and date of birth to view your registration record, polling location, and sample ballot
- Your polling location may change between elections; always verify before Election Day
Step 5 — Absentee & Early Voting
South Dakota allows any registered voter to request an absentee ballot for any reason. Here is how:
Request an Absentee Ballot
Contact your county auditor to request an absentee ballot application. Applications must be received by your county auditor no later than the close of business on the Thursday before Election Day. Completed ballots must be returned to your county auditor by the close of polls on Election Day.
Vote Early at the County Auditor's Office
Most South Dakota county auditors offer in-person early voting in the weeks leading up to Election Day. Hours and start dates vary by county. Contact your county auditor directly or check their website for the early voting schedule.
